ActivitiesWelcome to the Nautical and Technical Department. The NTD is responsible for managing the fleet in the broadest sense of the word. During every survey, depending on the number of running hours, the engines are provided with overhauled or new parts. This is done in collaboration with, among others, the engine supplier. The propelling engines in the push boats are all manufactured by MaK, except the harbour push boat “Veerhaven VI”, which is equipped with 2 DEUTZ SBA 12m 816 engines.
The propelling engines in the Veerhaven II, IV and V (1981) are type 6MU 452 AK. In the Veerhaven VII (1991) the engines installed are type 6MU 453C. The newest generation of push boats, the Veerhaven VIII, Veerhaven IX and Veerhaven X, from 1997 and respectively 1999 and 2007, are equipped with type 8M20 engines.
All these engines are set so that the maximum power per propeller is 1320 kW (1800 hp). The total engine power of the 3 engines is suitable for carrying out both 4-barge and 6-barge trips.
During the survey's work is carried out on the hull, as well as maintenance work on shafting, propellers, other ship's installations and preserving paint work. The NTD also supervises the maintenance that can be done on board the ships by the crew itself, consults with the ship's engineers on repairs to engines and auxiliary machinery and sees to it that parts are ordered and delivered on board. The NTD's duties also include maintaining the latest information concerning the sailing routes and regulations.
Nautical matters are discussed with the captains, as well as repair and/or replacement of nautical equipment, such as radars, mariphones, portophones, etc. Another duty of the NTD is to settle cases of damage with the relevant authorities/organisations, as well as maintaining contacts with government agencies, port authorities and police departments.
